Although the use of acupuncture to treat infertility is a relatively new treatment in Western countries, it has been used for thousands of years to balance many gynecological conditions, restore fertility health and stabilize pregnancy.

General Mechanisms

In general, acupuncture helps increase the blood flow to the reproductive organs and balance the hormones necessary for conception and healthy pregnancy to occur. In Chinese medicine when the circulation is decreased, and the body organs are not in balance, illness can occur which can lead to infertility.

Acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, and diet therapy can be used to increase ovarian reserve or effectiveness and assist in re-establishing sperm quality. Acupuncture can also help assist fallopian tube motility and to enhance the thickness and receptivity of the uterine lining to assist embryo implantation.

Commonly Treated Fertility Conditions

Acupuncture is frequently used in couples with fertility concerns involving PCOS, endomentriosis, luteal phase defect, low ovarian reserve, hormone imbalance, ovulation disorders, recurrent miscarriage, and male factor. Research has shown acupuncture to be effective in assisting in vitro fertilization (IVF) in preparation and during embryo transfer, helping to relax the uterus and reducing miscarriage rates.
