1. Infertility is a Woman's Problem

This common viewpoint is more myth than truth. Research shows that 30 percent of infertile couples are attributed to male factor such as sperm production and quality. And in 30 percent of cases, the cause in contributed to both the female and male partners. As a good rule, if a woman has been referred to a reproductive endocrinologist then her partner should receive a semen analysis. If the tests show any abnormal results then he should be referred to a male infertility specialist.

2. More sex men have, the greater the chances to fertilize an egg. Or, the more men abstain, the more sperm will be accumulated.

Both myths have the flaws. Having sex everyday before and during ovulation can actually decrease sperm count significantly. It is recommended that you have sex every other day around ovulation to maximize fertility. On the other hand, abstaining for long periods of time is not effective. Although sperm counts may rise somewhat, the quality will begin to decrease after 3 days due to free radical damage in the epididymis.

3. Once a man has a vasectomy, there is no going back.

Although this procedure is a permanent form of birth control, in 90 percent of men this procedure is able to be reversed. And in men where reversal in not the best option often testicular biopsy will produce enough health sperm to successful ICSI procedures.

4. Boxers are better than briefs to assist fertility.

This myth came about when theory that a mans testicles rose in temperature when wearing tightly fitting briefs thus affective sperm count. But there has been little research to confirm this theory. Although the testicles are at optimal function when they are slightly lower than the body temperature. Research has shown that laptop computers, long bike rides and high temperature hot tubs can have a negative effect on sperm production.

5. Taking hormone supplements or Viagra will improve a man's sperm count.

Testosterone is often used to treat men with low sex drive and erectile dysfunction, but it should not be given to a man want to enhance fertility. Testosterone provide feedback to the cells in the testicles to stop the production of sperm, as well to decrease the body's endogenous production. A man taking testosterone will often have little or no sperm in his ejaculate, and one stopping the medication will usually cause sperm counts to return to normal after 6-9 months.
